People and Rivers

In Australia, we are lucky to have many beautiful rivers from which we can benefit in many ways. Some people like to use the river for recreation - fishing, swimming or canoeing along the river or picnicking and bushwalking on the riverbank. Others enjoy spotting the wildlife, marvelling at the rich biodiversity in plant and animal populations, whilst others simply love looking at the natural beauty of the river itself.

Do you live near a river? Can you think of all the ways that you have enjoyed its benefits?

Yet people and their desire to be close to the water are placing great stress on the health of many rivers. Some of the very activities people do as part of enjoying the river are placing these precious environments at risk.

Check out the Threats to Our Rivers section to find out more.

Even more importantly, go to the 'How you can help' section on the home page and see that you can make a difference!
